Letter from a Homeless Teen Series Part 1

Letter from a Homeless Teen Series Part 1

Last year several of my friends and I set out to put a dent in the homeless teen population in Detroit. We found out some despairing things that we were not aware of concerning this population. The one thing that wasn’t a secret is that we MUST do something to prevent teen homelessness and I believe early entrepreneurship training and enlightened mentorship are the answers. I’ll tell you more about my thoughts later in this series but for now, this is your first of thirty-nine letters from a homeless teen that we were able to give housing, food and clothing for six months. She was asked to journal each day about whatever crossed her mind. Join the dialogue about how we can help end teen homelessness.

Detroit, September 15, 2011—The Blanket Relief for Area Shelters is the program that collects and distributes blankets for the homeless shelters and other human service agencies serving the homeless in Wayne , Oakland and Macomb County.

It is a community wide effort relying on individuals, schools, churches, business, and service clubs to collect money and new twin size blankets for World Medical Relief, which is the agency managing the program.

On Thursday September 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. World Medical Relief opens its doors with a special kick-off event to give more people a chance to become part of this crucial community program.

Versandra Kennebrew, local author and educator, will speak about how she became homeless and how she recovered. A lunch will be served.

30-Days of Self Improvement: Tips for People in Transition #5

REPENT: To turn away from …what?
As we continue to reflect on ways to enhance our lives while in transition, let’s look at the word repent. I know you’ve heard it before, if you have ever attended church. But if not, picture this, the robed preacher stands on a platform dripping with sweat, with bible in hand shouting “repent for the end is near.” He usually continues with “turn away from sin because God hates sin.” The boisterous preacher typically goes on for what seems like hours, listing each and every sin we humans commit.

Now that you have the most common picture one sees when they hear the word repent, let’s move back to your favorite chair or couch in front of your computer and look at the word repent and the act of repenting from the perspective of aspiring toward success or enhancing your life. The definition of the word repent is; to turn away from. So the act of repenting is an ongoing turning away from. But turning away from what, is probably your question. In order to answer it, I’d like to talk about what being a success requires us to turn away from for a few minutes.

In general, to be a success one must turn away from any habit, action or person that stands in the way of us being the best we can be. This includes; your boyfriend who doesn’t support your aspirations, your girlfriend who wants all your time but won’t assist you with learning how to better manage your business, smoking Chronic with your girls/boys which causes you to be lazy and nonchalant about accomplishing goals, hanging out at the club all times of night not getting proper rest, getting out of bed after 10am because you are depressed an unwilling to rise up out of despair, not eating nutritional foods further compromising your immune system and healthy cellular reproduction, not engaging in physical exercise causing atrophy and obesity, speaking negativity into your life and the lives of others… Well, you get the picture; we allow all kinds of stumbling blocks to keep us stuck in mediocrity.

Click “comment” below to share the habits, actions or people that you want to repent from. Name it and turn away from it today! I am here as your witness and accountability partner. Repent is an action word. So let’s get moving. We can do it. We are powerful. We are healers. We are teachers. We are jobs creators. We are inventors. We are innovators. We can change the world, starting at home with ourselves. But we can’t continue to carry around useless baggage; it slows the process of walking in our greatness.

30-Days of Self-Improvement Tips for People in Transition #2

  • Look around, you may feel lonely but you are not alone.
  • See things as they really are. Many are experiencing your same plight (problem). Many are not. Do not fall into the trap of hanging around people who are feeling sorry for themselves, having a pity party. Look for people who have a positive outlook on life and connect with them. Ask them to be your mentors.
  • No one is better than you. We are all made from the same good stuff so don’t feel intimidated by your new mentors. If they don’t have time to work directly with you but you feel like there is an invisible connection between the two of you, search them out on-line and make them a virtual mentor. Link up with them on social media sites, read their books and publications written about them. Just put their name in the Google search bar and you should find something, maybe even an extra mentor.

30-Days of Self-Improvement Tips for People in Transition #1

  • Find a safe, quiet place to rest and reprogram your mind.  What you think of most is what you will manifest or make real.
  • Take control of your thoughts by repeating positive affirmations and prayers throughout your day.
  • Put a rubber band around your wrist and pop yourself every time you think of negative things. You must replace (reprogram) those thoughts or they will continue to come back and haunt you.
  • You are not a victim. You are more than a conqueror. Speak back to the voices in your head that tell you anything that doesn’t serve your higher good.
  • You are experiencing a transition that is going to take you higher!
  • Don’t look down or you may miss the signs and directions along the way.
