A New Street Newspaper in Detroit, MI

The homeless in Detroit face dire situations every single day and with the city’s unemployment rates still relatively high, it’s difficult for anyone to find a job, especially for the homeless.

A new street newspaper, however, has come up with a way to help.

Thrive Detroit is a social enterprise and a monthly street newspaper. A street newspaper is an independent publication usually sold in public places in a city by the homeless or vulnerably housed individuals. These papers are a way for citizens who are homeless or vulnerably housed to learn how to step out as micro-entrepreneurs and to learn how to manage their own money.

I love writing for THRIVE Detroit. It’s another opportunity to reflect on my past homeless experience and share information and resources that support homeless prevention and self-sufficiency. I am hoping the next move will be to add an on-line subscription option. Then my friends and fans all over the world will be able to support this amazing social enterprise.

Letters from a Homeless Teen Part 3

Letters from a homeless teen

When I was young, my grandmother taught me 3 skills to make money and I have used two of them all my life to make hundreds of thousands of dollars. Those skills are cleaning and selling. No matter what job I have had, these two skills have made me an invaluable resource to the companies I work for and with. From cleaning a mini mansion and earning $200 for a day’s work to selling clothing at a retail chain on commission, I can always make a decent wage and be self sufficient.

We must teach children basic skills they can build upon, master and capitalize on when they are young. Practice makes perfect and mastery equals better pay for services rendered.

Please share your thoughts about early entrepreneurship and enlightened mentorship as ideas for homeless prevention. Street newspapers are excellent micropreneurship opportunities. Teens can learn the ins and outs of sales and distribution and even move into writing and editing if the have a passion for the written word. Most teens I know love poetry and this could be their in.
